In the Western world, we were taught the parable of the Ant and the Grasshopper. For us, the message was based on how much each did or did not achieve. To Lao’s Eastern viewpoint, he highlights the work itself as opposed to the accomplishment.
In our current environment, we often forget the truth that more does indeed connect us than separates us. Be it is politically, culturally, financially, or whatever, most of us simply seek to be proud of what we do, provide for our families, and be a positive influence on those around us.
Keep in mind that your behavior and gifts on a singular day (like a Birthday or Valentine’s Day) should be comparable to how you treat those most important to you on every other day! How you handle yourself in the “unnoticed” times is what earns massive collateral for those moments where we visibly fall short.
It is tough for us to recognize in the moment, but rejection is almost always just temporary. The answer may be ‘No’ in some cases, but it is certainly not in all. If in a single case, it may just be ‘Not Now’. Try to remember that few things are forever – even ‘No’.
If you seek to be a growing organization, you have to address delivery and execution within your current footprint & customer base. Putting the processes and patterns in place to be effective “where you are” is one of the biggest success factors toward looking to something more.
It does not make sense to normal Sales & Negotiation experts who focus on the agreement as to the pathway of successful conclusion/conversion, but “No” is the most effective negotiating tool we hold. Instead of working to “Yes”, seek out the quickest “No”.
It quickly starts setting boundaries and helps identify objectives and fears that might not otherwise be verbalized.
Time is our most precious asset and, unfortunately, the one that too many of us waste. One of our most-heavily used excuses for avoiding something is that “it is not the “right” time”. History is awash with excuses that could only be defined as “Not Now”. As Reverend King noted, there is never a “wrong” time to do the “right” thing!
Regardless of your tactics or objectives, your audience has to notice you and respond before anything else positive is going to happen. If they cannot find you, they will never hear you; if they do not hear you, they will never respond in a meaningful way (for you or them).
It was with sadness that I heard of John Madden’s passing. I found this quote that best epitomized his outlook on Football (as well as Life). This was his ethic and approach whether as a successful coach or even more memorable off-field fixture of the game he loved. Even as “one of the boys”, he was able to bring the game to audiences and fans in ways few have accomplished. #RIPCoach
I find myself holding back which creates an absence of Candor or carelessly saying my piece missing the Kindness.
It is frankly easy to “give feedback” to those with whom I do not have a relationship. That is definitely an area that I have got to get better because it is a carelessness when interacting with another human!
